NEW! Exploring Abstraction: Through the Landscape - Wednesday Afternoons: Fall II
This class explores ideas of landscape through the work of Abstract Expressionist painters of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, artists who revolutionized modern art and shifted the art world's center from Paris to New York City. We will also look to their predecessors, including the Impressionists, Fauvists, and Surrealists, whose ideas and techniques helped lay the groundwork for their innovations. Throughout the class, each student will work from a landscape that holds personal meaning, exploring ways to interpret and reimagine it through drawing, painting, and collage. In addition to the course fee, a materials fee of $100 will be payable directly to the instructor. An additional supply list will also be emailed at the time of registration. Approximate supply cost, depending on materials already owned: $115. No class November 26.
Kenneth Marunowski
OAC Faculty
Kenneth Marunowski is an artist and educator who lives and works in his hometown of Valley View, Ohio, just south of Cleveland. Ken grew up enjoying the cultural amenities of a big city and the natural splendor of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, both right at his doorstep. Marunowski’s passion for culture and nature took him to Kent State University where he received a B.A. in French and a B.F.A in Painting (landscape painting focus), the beginnings of a lifelong investigation of language and image. A pivotal junior year abroad studying both subjects in Aix-en-Provence, France deepened the young painter’s appreciation for culture, language and art. Years later, a Master of Arts in English as a Second Language provided Marunowski an opportunity to teach in Dresden, Germany before returning to Kent State to pursue a Ph.D. in Literacy, Rhetoric and Social Practice. Following his doctoral degree, Marunowski taught professional writing to arts and letters and social science students at the University of Minnesota Duluth for several years before dedicating himself completely to his painting practice. A full-time artist since 2016, Ken shares his rigorous pursuit of abstract and representational painting not only through the works he creates but also through the painting and drawing classes and workshops he teaches.
