Unwind in this one-hour evening workshop designed to bring joy back into the painting process. Each session focuses on painting as a flow art, where the emphasis is on exploration and creativity rather than the final result. Students will engage in playful projects that spark child-like imagination while gently challenging the inner perfectionist. Along the way, participants will learn foundational painting techniques they can apply in a relaxed, supportive setting. Inspiration will also come from artists such as Alma Thomas and Hilma af Klint, whose distinctive styles celebrate color, pattern, and expression. Acrylic paint will be the main medium, with opportunities to experiment with watercolor, paint pens, and more. Take one workshop or all three: the choice is yours! Join us for a unique Quilling, Paper Art and Watercolor workshop inspired by the beauty of botanicals, featuring cactuses and mushrooms as our creative muse. In this hands-on session, participants will discover the magic of combining delicate watercolor washes with the intricate textures of paper art, learning how quilling can bring depth, dimension, and a touch of wonder to their illustrations. In this one-day illustrative workshop, students will explore fun, stylized ways to illustrate a favorite all recipe or cherished family dish. Through guided instruction and creative experimentation, participants will learn how illustrators use imagery, lettering, and composition to bring food stories to life on the page. Students will create a finished recipe illustration that reflects personal taste, memory, or seasonally-themed tradition—perfect as a keepsake or a thoughtful handmade gift. Open to all skill levels, this workshop celebrates creativity, storytelling, and the joy of sharing food through art. All supplies are provided.

In this workshop, we'll dive into color theory and learn how to use color schemes to make your artwork more dynamic with acrylic paints. Through guided instruction, you'll explore primary, secondary, and tertiary colors by painting your own color wheel, then move into warm versus cool tones and color schemes including complementary, analogous, and monochromatic. You'll also be introduced to Josef Albers' influential theory of color and how to practically apply it to your own work. From there, you'll put your knowledge into practice with a painting exercise utilizing analogous and complementary color schemes. A fun and eye-opening way to see how color choices can transform your work. Perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike. All supplies provided.

This course introduces students to both soft and oil pastels, exploring the unique qualities of each medium. Through observation-based work, students will build foundational skills in blending and layering to create their own original pieces. No experience required. This class is designed for students with prior watercolor experience who are eager to build on their skills in botanical painting. Students will learn to closely observe plants and depict them in botanically accurate and highly detailed watercolor. Explore methods for capturing the delicate details of botanical subjects, including leaves, flowers, roots, fruit, and pollinators. Together, we’ll work on layering transparent washes, perfecting dry brush techniques, and achieving realistic light, shadow, and depth to bring compositions to life. Techniques include layered wet-into-wet washes, damp painting, dry brush, masking fluid, lifting and more. A supply list is provided at registration. Intermediate - Advanced students welcomed! As drawing skills are needed, OAC offers a variety of drawing classes to choose from. All painters are welcome in this open studio environment. Students will develop independent art-making choices while enjoying group and individual instruction and encouragement. Being an artist is an excellent way to end the day! All supplies included. Grades K–2 meet Mondays and Tuesdays; Grades 3–5 meet Wednesdays (Art Explorers) and Thursdays (Art Explorers – Ceramics; see course below). Resident students will be conveniently chaperoned and shuttled from Moreland Hills Elementary to the Art Center.

Learn about various drawing tools and techniques such as shading, perspective, and portraiture while gaining (or further developing) skills and confidence. Explore the fascinating world of silver metal clay in this interesting, all-levels class! This revolutionary product allows you to design using a moldable material made of microscopic particles of fine silver and an organic binder to form a moldable jewelry medium. Once your creation is dried, it is fired in a jewelry kiln; the organic binder burns off, and the silver particles sinter, leaving you with a solid metal piece! Already taken this class? Jewelry materials paid directly to the instructor are estimated at $18-$130, depending on the metal clay you choose (silver, copper, or bronze). No class November 4 & 25.

This class explores ideas of landscape through the work of Abstract Expressionist painters of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, artists who revolutionized modern art and shifted the art world's center from Paris to New York City. We will also look to their predecessors, including the Impressionists, Fauvists, and Surrealists, whose ideas and techniques helped lay the groundwork for their innovations. Throughout the class, each student will work from a landscape that holds personal meaning, exploring ways to interpret and reimagine it through drawing, painting, and collage. In addition to the course fee, a materials fee of $100 will be payable directly to the instructor. An additional supply list will also be emailed at the time of registration. Calling Art Explorers grades 3-5! Let's get creative with clay! In this after school class, young artists will explore clay through handbuilding, surface design, and glazing techniques to create original ceramic pieces. This ceramics-focused day offers expanded opportunities for clay work within our established Art Explorers program, while still providing group and individual instruction. All supplies included. Resident students will be chaperoned and shuttled from Moreland Hills Elementary to the Art Center. Student artwork must be picked up within two weeks of the session ending. After that, unclaimed work may be discarded. No class November 26.

Learn how to work with oil paint through direct instruction in materials, color theory, visual concepts, and brushwork. This class is designed for beginners and those with some experience who want to revisit core techniques. Sessions include demonstrations, painting time, and individual feedback to help you build confidence and control in the medium. A supply list will be emailed at the time of registration.
